If it is the starter? and probably it is! then have someone hold the ignition key all the way over to start. Then from under the car wrap the starter with a hammer,
i had to do this several times with my 68 after we put the headers on, he said it but ill tell you too, DO NOT HIT IT TO HARD! at least if your planning on keeping this thing...

Hitting the starter with a hammer is not a fix. You will end up replacing it sooner or later.

Yeah i know it's not a fix, MadMike i was just trying to help them narrow down their problem. Whether it was a starter relay switch, solenoid, ignition switch, etc:.I myself have gone thru a couple of starters, have another rebuilt one ready! when the one on the car pukes, they take alot of heat down by where the exhaust crosses over to the cat, but i beefed up my heat shield so hopefully that will be that. And Mike I dont know if i told you or not? but that's a nice ride you got.

Beatting the starter is fine. Sometimes it has to be done. But not every one carries a harley tool with them and its not cool to be in the parking lot with your friends and try to climb under the car! A test light on the small wire and a buddy turning the key will tell the the ignition is send juice.
I am now going to look in my haynes and see if it says to hit the starter with a hammer. I am really going to look because its a haynes and it may be in there.
And thanks for the compliment

LOL! You know i think it is in the haynes manuel. I figured this way he would only smash his thumb!! as oppossed to starting a CAR-B-QUE. The Chilton's book says! (if you look real hard! "JK" )having your wife or girlfreind get under the car, while you sit in it and turn the key, boy are those guy's smart or what.

I had a girl friend under the car before while I was inside working. I told the police officer I "accidently" released the mergency brake No but really I did all the work in bed so she had to make up for it some how. That and she did not have a car so if she wanted me to drive her some where mine had to be fixed!
