So I am fixing up my camaro my friend sold me im replacing the ignition on it so currently it wont start now im not a genious with cars i know what im doing as far as fixing things but this one has sat for about three years and i dont know what i need to do before i start it i know i need to drain the gas but what about the rest of the fuel lines and other stuff? I dont know exactly what to do for somethin that has sat so long


I decided i think i wanna completely restore it but its not something ive done before does anyone know where i could go to get all the info im gonna need? its gonna take some time seeing how i dont have alot of money right now but any help would be greatly appreciated

 

Ouch, three years is a long, long time.

Let's start with the obvious. Gas, battery, and electronics.

The gas is going to be varnish by now. You may be lucky, and there may not be any in the lines or the fuel rails, or the injectors. Hopefully not. My suggestion is to drop the tank, flush it, clean it, and put clean gas in. Reinstall it and flush out the lines, obviously disconnecting them before the fuel rails.

I also suggest checking all the vacuum lines and electrical lines for rat infestations. Those buggers love to snack on your vunerable lines. And check for vacuum lines that are simply old and decomposed. This will be a grueling process that won't be easy, but trust me when I say it's worth it.

I assume you can handle and know to make sure all other fluids will be prime before you attempt to start, yes?

 

yeah i know all about all the other fluids im not to concerned with them cause im gonna change it all anyway thank you for the help as well .. how do i drop the tank though as far as i can tell it sits right above the rear axle? and it was sitting basically in a field so its good to know that ill have to replace vacuum and electrical i found some dead mice when i was pulling the interior so i guess i should start pullin everything out then?

 

Yep, not surprised you found them. I'd check literally everywhere there are vital lines, and that includes under the dash, under the car, and everywhere you can get at in the engine bay.

Yeah, the tank is right above the rear end. You will have to drop the rear end and the exhaust. When you drop the rear axle, be careful of the brake lines, they will need to be disconnected as to not snap and break them.

Oh, bit of an afterthought here: change your fuel filter, no matter what. Change your spark plugs too, imho, but if you check them and think they are good, go with it.

 

ok cool i will do all that im gonna have to find somewhere to do it though its still sittin where its been and i dont wanna work on it where its at especially cause it will prob take some time to do
