Unhappy 88 Headlight Problem

Hey, my low beam headlights don't work. I turned them on and then blinked and went out.

The odd thing is, the 4 bulb system all works on High Beam, but not on Low beam, the 2 lows are out. Hmm?

Since it it the same bulbs on high beam, the bulbs must work , right?
then is there some relay problem or something??
I checked fuses, and they are good. But none were labeled as headlites.

Then manual talks about circut breakers and one in the headlight switch.

Has anyone else had this problem??

Thanks,
Joe in Calgary

Most likely your hi/low switch is worn out. It's located on the steering column under the dash. My 91 used to do the same thing where the lows would go out after switching off the high beams. Usually flicking the switch a few times got them to go back on.

OK, I've changed the dimmer switch on the steering column, tight fit there.
But it didnt solve my problem. The both low beams are still out. all 4 high beams still work. the part wasnt expensive <20$
The next part, the headlight switch in the dash is more expensive and harder to get too. You must remove the instrument cluster to get to it, right?

Has anyone R/R the headlite switch before? tips?? thanks

you are gonna laugh when i tell you it wasnt the dimmer switch,
or the headlite switch, which is tough to replace.

a lesson grasshopper ... when 2 bulbs go out at same time, check the 2 bulbs first.

it was both bulbs. i was wrong to assume it couldnt be them and did the switches.
....but now i can drive at nite, so im crusin...

You mean, both of them went out at the same time?
Well, at least you have a new switch. They can wind up going goofy anyway.

Did you try replacing that $6.00 headlight before ripping and replacing everything else???
Do the simple things first.
