Default '86 IROC Passenger Window Problem

Just purchased a nice '86 IROC coupe. Passenger window is up and will go down approximately 3" then stop and I hear grinding noise, like maybe there is something stuck in the the window mechanism gear or missing teeth in same. Obviously, motor works as window will go fully back up. Haven't taken door panel off yet, as I just bought the car 2 days ago. Previous owner told me of the problem, but he never had it fixed. Any ideas ?

Sounds like a gear issue or maybe the motor needs replaced. Forgive me if you already know this but make sure you use on of those panel pry bars to pop the clips out on the panel and maybe buy you a pack to replace the clips. Also, I think it you need to get the window down to get the top panel off/ Also, check out some videos on changing the window motor. Its not complex but also requires drilling out some rivets. Lastly, not sure what condition the door is in, but I would repair everything before putting the panel back on.

Yeah, I've got a panel clip tool and extra panel clips. Have also watched several videos on how to replace the motor. My problem is going to be how to get the window down to remove the door panel, because right now it will only go down about 3-4 inches with the motor, then stops and grinds.
