hey can i get advice here. im lookin to buy a 85 iroc z this weekend. the car is in good shape from what it looks like. no rust havent seen no oil spots or anything to bad. i do know it needs a new mass air sensor, the car has been garaged for the past 3 years. maybe one or twice is was takin out for a quick ride. my question is after the car sitting for that period of time what precautions should i do and take b4 i start and run the car. and actually drive it too my house. ? would i need to change the valve gaskets or any other gastets from temputure rot, ?

 

your biggest issue will be the fuel system. if you live in a humid part of the country or in the south where there is sometimes dramatic temperature changes the inside of the fuel tank may have condensated and collected rust. you can either change the fuel filter quite often for a while too see or you can be safe and remove the tank which is a pain in the ****. if it has had the same fuel in it for three years that needs to be removed anyways. you don't want to be running partially gelled fuel through your injectors. since it has set up for so long after you start driving it everyday, there are gonna be problems that arise. 85 is the first year of the 305 TPI and computer assisted engines tend to be a little more cantankerous after sitting than a carbed motor is. just remember the service engine soon light is your friend. it identifys errors in the computer operated systems. most auto parts stores will read the codes for free. so if it pops on don't hesitate to have it checked out. about that rust thingy ... don't be surprised if you find some. it tends to hide in unseen areas. under the bottom of the doors, in the nooks and crannys of the fender wells, around the t-tops are problem areas. good luck and enjoy it. camaros rule. sick

 

cool thanks for that. the last thing i want is more caused problems after buying the car. ok so im gonna deffinly siphon the old gas and put some high test in it. im changin the fuel injectors and the fuel filter. and then a full tune up after that.

 

i see we have the same car . what problems can arise. i hope not big money problems bc im not planning on doin work for a while with it. i just want it running good until then. anything else you know of that would help b4 i start this car

 

I read something about the carbs getting retarded too...You might want to check the carb and see if theres sittin fuel or oil or whatever.

 

nahhhhhh not talking big money just normal sensor errors. oxygen, maf, and so forth. actually the 85 IROC is one of the most sought after third gens. enjoy it. sick
