Default 83 305 Idle low

My 83 z28 305 engine w/ carburator is idling really low and it cuts off as soon as I let my foot off of the gas until I warm it up. In the manual I have it says only a factory authorized dealer should attempt to adjust the idle, is this true. Could I try it myself without screwing something up major? After warming it up for a while it will idle around 400-500 rpms and it should be at about 1000. It also sounds like it is hunting when it is doing this.

Thanks for any advice.

It's gotta be either the choke setting, curb idle adjustment, idle jet adjustment screws, or all three.
Start with the choke setting, since you say it won't idle on it's own when cold. Then do the other two idle adjustments.
Use this for reference: http://www.bdub.net/manuals/Quadraje...anual_1981.pdf
