Default 377

anyone have any experience with a 377? I believe it's a 400 block w/a 350 crank. I was talking to a guy about different SBC's and this came up. Just wondering what other people thought about them

that's pretty much why I posted it, I have no idea about them, my dad and some other people were talking about them in the auto parts store. Hopefully someone has something about them

The 377 is a destroker engine. If you were to compare the 377 to the popular 383 stroker motor, the h.p ratings would be very close to each other. Where they differ is where they make the h.p. and torque. The 377 will be able to hit higher rpm's, so if you're building a road track racer, that would be a benefit. But, for a street or drag motor, the bigger stroke engines have more torque in the lower rpm band. More torque is what yanks you out of the hole, and that's where most street engines spend their time. Trust me, you'll like it. If you have a 400 block for street/strip use, build a 400/406.

so in theory, wouldn't destroked engine rev faster? which would take it up to the rpm band where it makes the most hp faster so it would comparable to the 383?

It's possible that both could reach maximum h.p. at or close to the same rpm. The shorter stroke 377 can reach higher rpm's than the 383. But get there faster? Maybe, maybe not, it depends on the weight of the rotating parts. The 377 has 400 pistons which are bigger and heavier , and the 400 crank is heavier than the 350 crank.
