Default 350 swap project

I am building a 350 and so i can gain knowledge from the process rather then just dropping a pre built motor into my car. Also it will be easier for me to spend $2,000 little chunks at a time rather then all at once.

I purchased a 350 fuel injected from a 89 silverado 2500 for $75 witch he said had a miss.

What do i want to do? I think 300 to 330 HP is not unreasonable i would like any suggestions you guys can give me for parts. It will be for street/race so I will want it tame enough to drive as my daily.

Also i am planning to switch it to a carbed unless i can get some good suggestions for fuel injection. And if i go injected i will need to get a high pressure fuel pump which shouldn't be a problem.

Tear down

Here is the start of my project. as i said i purchased a 350 and it sat in the back of my truck for a few days. I have no engine hoist only an engine stand so I dismantled some of it in the back of my truck.

cylinder on the left has a blown valve. the last 2 on the right had a bent rod for the intake valve. Cylinder walls look good.

Good amount of sludge build up. clogged a few of the rods.

My opinion is...You bit off more then you can handle on your project. Even after you have the block cleaned & machined & checked for cracks it may turn into a expensive boat anchor.

Nice pictoral! Its good to see that you are tearing into it. Have you identified what caused you bent rods and blown valve? Providing the block cleans up well with no repairs (ditto for your heads) and you dont go crazy with the mods, you will stay below 2000 dollars. 330 HP is well within easy reach. Now, if you have it torn down, give it a better cam. You will kick yerself in the *** for tearing it down that far and not adding a nice cam. A set of heads would be nice (I cant tell if those are Vortecs or not) but that will set you back at least a grand. (yes, you can get vortecs used, but you will need to get them machined for the bigger cam and it will cost as much as new in the end. I just did i this winter....)

Ok, it needs a good cleaning, so what. As long as the block, crank, and heads aren't damaged, you have a lot to work with there. Look up the casting numbers on those heads, the design of the combustion chamber is saying Vortec to me. And putting in a new cam and lifters goes without saying.

The casting number is on top of the heads, hiding under all that crusty crud. If Vortecs, they would be either an 062 or 906 casting.

The K018 on the right is the casting date. K=11 (alphabetical months, A-L=1-12), then the day of month, then the year.
That makes the casting date 11-01-1988 (cast in 1988 for the 1989 model truck it came out of).
You can also look to see if you have a build/VIN stamp with a suffix code on the front pad of the block, in front of the pass side head.
