Default 3.08 to 3.73

What do i need to do to change my rear gear from 3.08 to 3.73? Do I have to replace the entire rear axle, driveshaft, etc. Is this something that a driveway mechanic can accomplish? Thanks guys

for a driveway mechanic i would say change the whole rear end. u can just change gears but u gotta adjust everything just right or the unit blows so if u want to do that, have a good shop do it. cost will be about as much or more than changing the whole thing.

You will also notice a nice gain going up to 3.73s that is a good size jump and i think you will be very pleased

Your chances of this are slim to none. For starters for the lack of more details, I am going
to guess. 3:08 gears = 2-series carrier & open rear.
1) So you can buy thick gear set for the 2-series, but still a open rear.
2} You can buy a 3-series limited slip & 3:73 gears & hope you have 28 spline axle shafts??
no year given.
3) Swap in complete axle assembly is easy, except finding one with a 3:73 ratio .

Also most of the above are not a DIY job in the driveway. Having it done by a shop, estimate $1200+ for parts & labor (lot more parts then just 3:73 geas).

My opinion is forget the whole thing. Also the dr. shaft will not require replacing.

Well, i would forget about the whole thing but the rear is giving up on me, the past month its felt life the car has been giving itself shots of nos randomly between 1500-2500rpm ever since ive got the 350 put in. I DO have a 3.23 rearend in my backyard but im affraid its as weak as the 3.08, or is that a road I should travel?

Go 12 bolt and you will never have to worry for a long long long time...

When you are injecting NOS you have to pay for the results. So the time has come to pay for the fun burnouts. Now pay the piper.

He said it felt like he was getting shots of NOS, not that he was actually giving it NOS.

Screw it, im just going to stick with my current rear until i get my t56 put in. I saw a 3.73 on ebay from a 97 firebird for about 600, so if anyones interested and have te money i would go for it.
