I was looking around at lockers and gears for for the rear end. I was wondering, how do you know if you have a 26 or 28 spline axel? I have a '92 RS 305 & an open 2.73 rear

should be the 28 spline. earlier models had the 26, i think it was 84/85 that it changed

 

Great, any recommendations on the end gear? 3.42, 3.73, 4.10?

well, what are your intetions with the car? daily driver, does it see highway often, street and strip? what are your current mods?

 

Its a weekend car, mostly sees the highway as I like to travel on my days off. So far its got a new paint job, new radiator and cooling system. Decided id start with the rear, then move to engine components. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks

 

1) A locker is NOT for a street driven car...PERIOD (don't confuse a locker & limited slip)
2) All 10-bolt rears for 1992 model year had 28 spline axke shafts.
3) Gear changes is NOT a DIY job.
4) Gears are NOT going to increase the performance of your 305 TBI grocery getter.
5) Gear change for Parts & labor expect to to pay $700+ depending on where you live.

Advice to you: Fnd another project to spend
your money on.

 

like he said. but if you wanted, you can get a set of used gears from a salvage yard. almost all second generation s10 blazers had 3.73 gears and a limited slip. the internals could all be transferred over at a shop and correctly setup

Yes...The Limited slip will work with the correct gear & pinion (note you have 2-series gears). Still not a simple project.

 

If you have a decent amount of mechanically ability, it's very possible for you to set up your own gears.

Research it, buy the correct tools, and approach the situation CORRECTLY and you won't have any problems. If you don't take the job seriously and think you can take short cuts you're sadly mistaken and shouldn't waste your time or money. This is why it's usually a job left up to the professionals.
