My mom bought this car in 1992 new and its going to be handed down to me in the next year or so. I plan to keep this car in the family for a long time, however, I'm not satisfied with the power it has so I am going to be doing alot of work to it. My question right off the bat for now is, I'm planning on putting a 350ci v8 into it along with the proper parts to ensure it runs, transmission, differentials, all of that. I would prefer to get a new motor, crates i believe they are called, not a rebuilt one. My question is A. will a 350ci fit in a 1992, its currently holding a 305ci, and B. can anyone recommend some companies that offer crate motors that will be a good fit for a '92 camaro. I have been told Jegs is a good company, but I'd like to look around and see what other options I have. Also any advice would be nice.

 

First of all, if the 305 is in there then any SBC engine will fit. So yes a 350 will fit. As for companies, I recommend Jeg's just because they usually have a large selection of engines. That and they are pretty reliable. Does it really have a 6 speed or a 5 speed? As far as I know no third gens came with 6 speeds, especially 305s.

 

Sounds good. It has 5 speeds, then reverse, so I guess thats a 5-speed, unknown. All i Know is I can use 6 different gears. What is an SBC engine though?

 

SB= small block (the main part of the engine which the cam and crankshaft and pistons and all that are in) C= chevy so SBC= Small block chevy and as for the 350 you wanna put it in it is very easy to get your hands on a 350 even a factory one out of a camaro most if not all the 350s for third gens were tuned port injection and if thats wat your looking for just look around ebay possibly or local newspapers for a 350 tpi that would be your easiest engine option but also a carb 350 is pretty easy and as i have said 350s are very popular engines and fairly easy to find hope this helps a little keep us posted

 

Thanks for clearing up the SBC thing. I'm planning on getting a newly made 350 instead of a used or refurbished one off of ebay or a junkyard etc. My long term plans for the car is to put a 350, unsure of what company at the moment though, and then add performace parts, headers, cranks, pistons, etc, and I would like to supercharge it. I basiclly want to turn the car into a beast but nothing to dramatic. Just a nice powerful ride. I've been looking around Jegs website and they have like 5 or 6 different manufacturers for engines. I was curious as to whether or not anyone has heard bad or good news from any of the companies. I'm looking at the GM's and the Edelbrocks. They are in the price range im willing to spend down the line and they are large name companies. Any input for other engine makers I could look at. I would to keep the engine *assembled/ready to run* under $6000.

i would go with a 383 Stroker. They sell the kits in Jegs, Summit etc. You can find kits that come with the whole bottom end(not a cam) But it comes with the crank, rods, pistons, rings, bearings, etc. It jus depends on how much you would want to spend. A 383 Stroker is not good for turnin alot of RPM. so it depends on what you want the car to do. but a 383 stroker is a really good motor for a third gen, i got one in mine

Another suggestion is go with a 355 SBC. It is a 350 block bored .030 over. These are also very strong motors which can turn more rpm than a 383 Stroker. It jus depends on how much you want to spend, How much do you know about cars? If you dont know enough to build your self and engine it would be a good idea to find a good mechanic that knows what he is doing, or even find a WELL known machine shop to do the machine work to the motor and they can also put it together for you, the only thing you would have to do is put it in the car and get it running.

It jus depends on deep your pockets are!!!!

 

Hey man have you ever ran your car with the stroker, what were the times. Im in the process of building an 83' z28. Im planning on running a 355,TH350,3500 converter,4:10 gears. Trying to put together a mid twelves car, so im up on some options.

 

hey, I never ran it with Slicks yet. I finshed the car bout 3weeks before i left to school in NC,i didnt have the money at the time for slicks, i didnt bring it with me cause its a gas hog, and didnt really have room for it. but i ran it with a used set of IMCA G60s that came off my IMCA Modified Stock car, and with it spinnin like hell off the line it ran bout a high 12, low 13, cant remember exact but close to that, i know if i ran slicks it should hit 11s. car is strong reallyyyyyyyyy strong. ill try and get some picks up on here.
