Are you talking about the upper radiator hose? If so, you can squeeze the radiator hose as close to the water neck on the intake to burp out any air. It sounds like you may have air trapped in there.

most common problem with the heater not working is air bubbles trapped in the heater core (or wherever the highest point in the cooling system is)
