1989 camaro wont start
well just got a new battey because the other one went bad. well it was running Ok for a while. until the last 3 days. needed jumped everywhere i went (which got really old) so went and got the alt checked. working fine. so i get a new battery, now when i turn the key my temp gauge either goes all the way up and wont turn over or everything just turns off completley, i close my door then open it and i have power again. i mean like fuel pump and everything looses power. so i hooked up my code reader and i got, "Diagnostic mode; no distributor signal to Electronic Control Module; System PASS"
any one got any ideas??? this is my dd by the way. has 47,859 original miles and its a fuel injected 2.8 v6

inspect the chassis ground, battery postive and alternator wires for loose connections, corrosion, or any signs of damage. it sounds like it could just be a bad wire. also check the wiring going to and at the fuse block for the same problems.

I would check the wires on the battery and make sure the posts are clean but I would do one other thing. This sounds alot like an issue I had with a Berlinetta I owned. Check the wire the runs into the back of the alternator. Mine was breaking off and thus losing connection to the alternator which keeps your battery charged. It could be that simple. You said you also got a distributor code? When was the last time the cap or distributor itself was changed? Could be that.

need to look for ground studs or screws along the bottom of the dash and the steering column. also should be a ground junction under the kick pads. clean and tighten any u find.

ok well i checked and cleaned grounds, conections ect that needed it. it attemped to turn over then quit and doing the same thing. but now if i turn my headlights on i loose all power to everything then i close and open my door im geting power again.

does it have any sort of antitheft? i know the 1990 started with the vats, im not sure if it may have been brought on late 89. or it might be possible someone added something to it at sometime, and it has since failed. most of them disable the ignition, which could cause the code.

that might be the problem then. i dont know why the door closing would change it, but im betting there is something wrong with the replacement. there is a write up somewhere on this site about disabling the vats. you could try doing that and see if it stops your problem
