Default 1988 v6 2.8l tune up

hi I have an 1988 camaro with a 2.8L v6.
How do I set the timing while the engine is running with the timing light, with no advance. The car is running really crappy the service light is on and I just did the plugs and wires. I did the thing to short the A&B to count the codes and none came up, I think?
This is what I was told to do, Start the engine. With the engine running and all accessories off, use a jumper wire to connect diagnostic terminal B and ground terminal A of the 12-terminal Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL), located under the instrument panel. I don't want to blow the ECM.

Just Went Through The Running Crappy Thingy With My 2.8 Changed Everything You Can Think Of. In The End It Turned Out To Be The Pickup Coil. Not Sure About The Way You Jumpered It But, If When You Did It The Service Engine Light Blinked In Three Blink Sequence There Are No Codes. If Not It May Have Not Been Jumpered Correctly. Sick
