Default 1986 305 144k for $2000? Need insight! *pics*

Hello everyone! This is my first post on this forum and I was hoping someone can help me out here. I've been looking to buy a 3G camaro for about 2-3 months now...have about 5 thousand to spend.

Well I came across a 1986 305(possibly a 350) camaro with 144K...for $2000 OBO. Now, I've been checking weekly online for camaros and this one seems to take the cake! Here's what the add said.

Restored
Good Condition
T-roof
Drives great.
Grey exterior
Nothing to Certify
No E-test needed

I'm not too sure whats restored on this car. I'm callingagain tonight to set up a time where I can check this car out. The car waslady driven most of its life and she didn't know if it was a 305 or 350. She's getting back to me tonight after she calls her dad [sm=smiley20.gif]Here's some pictures..

I wanted an engine picture but she didn't have any tonight. Not to mention this car is about 45 minutes from where I live. Any comments or useful info? What are some things I should look out for when I go take a look this week? Quick car [8D]?

Thanks alot guys. I've never been this excited to buy a car

I would not say that is a $2000 car. Maybe a 1200-1500 at most if its very nice. It would have to be damn nice for me to even consider $1500.
It would be a 305. The 350 did not return until 87 and only in a few Irocs in 86.
And that is just the plain jane low endCamaro. Not a Z28 or Iroc. The only thing I can see going for it is the low miles for that age of car. But they only had the xx,xxx mile on the odometer, not the xxx, xxxso it can roll a few times and you would not know it.

This is the only camaro i've seen for 2000 up where I live...and is there anything wrong with getting a plain jane camaro? Let me explain myself better...

I'm 17 looking to get a first car. I was driving a96 toyota camry and want something with more power. Would this be a fast car? I don't want something tooo powerful and I thought for the condition its in, 2000 seems like a good price up here in Canada.

It looks decent enough, but definitely argue the price as much as you can if you go for it- or keep looking. I don't know where you're close to or I'd go hunting just for kicks, but surely there's a decent few cars around.

Or you could just get a Civic and pimp it all out

I live in Ontario Canada...in a small town called Erin! I'm not too agressive of a driver but I want some power when I put my foot down. You don't think this cars good for that? And i'm also thinking about my insurance...maybe a basic camaro would be good until I'm older and making more money.

I dunno how it is in Canada, but here in the states lately, Camaro's are cheaper to insure than in previous years. Most do not even ask if it is a Z28, a V8, etc. They say the most expensive car now to insure is a Civic. My 83 Z28 is only $700 a year for liability.

IMHO, I would wait unless you REALLY like the car. You could come across a clean Z or even an Iroc if you wait long enough. By getting this plain jane camaro, you will get a slow 305, mushy suspension, and a one wheel peel rear end. Not to mention the other commodities you will lose, along with any resale value down the road.

You should look for a later year 3rd gen. That car kinda looks like s**t with the grey paint and no ground effects. My 91 rs looks way better with ground effects and high rise. If you don't mind driving auto you should get a 91-92 z28 or a late eighties Iroc-z with 350. You'll notice the difference.

Just my thoughts.

No there is nothing wrong with a plain jane. Also I do not know if you are talking 2000 US or Canadian.
I will use an example
About 4 years ago I bought my 91 RS for $2500 US. It has now 189,000 miles. It has a 305 TBI, alloy wheels, areo package ground effects and is newer.
I have no idea about Canada but here in California things cost more than in most other states. We have the nations highest gas prices. Now maybe $2000 in what ever dollar is good where you're at but what currency you are talking about has never been said.

Canadian currency. Let me know what you all think of this idea.

Buy this camaro, and have a winter project of swapping to a 350?

Would that be efficent to do this? Andwould it proform likea 350 Iroc or a bit under because of different styles?

And can you take a look at this add? I don't fully understand it but would this be a better option?

The plain jane Camaro won't handle as well as an Iroc or Z28. It would also have different suspension.
The car in that other ad
The early Camaros had a 350 turbo hydromatic 3 speed instead of the 700R4 4 speed auto. The shift kit will improve it by giving it firmer shifts. A stall converter, depending on what rpm range its for, just does not fully engauge until those rpms are reached. High rpm stall converters are mostly used for engines with a lopey cam and they would not sit in drive and the brake on without dyeing.
The 305 HO had my horse power than the standard 305 but not much more really. If it is a HO it would have (if it still has the original) dual snorkle air cleaner, different cam for more power. I think it may also have a different computer tune and secondary metering rods

Oh and if its a Z28 it will have , in my opinion, better looks. Ground effects (not as big as the 85-92 model years but still), nicer looking grill and tail lights and a different style hood
