STRONG gas smell
yes my car is a california car. The lines connect outside the car...the lines come from the gas tank and connect to this canister, from the OUTSIDE...just to the front of the tank. I can get to the lines from underneath the car....but the canister can only be reached from inside the car.
The best I can do is give you an idea of what it might be related to. The California only 1970 Camaro had a liquid/vapor separator, that was mounted above the gas tank. This was in addition to the charcoal canister up front. From what I've seen of them though, it was a smaller black plastic piece that doesn't resemble what you have there. Your car is a 72 right? Is it possible that can of yours does the same thing? Could be. I couldn't find any documentation about anything like that for your year though, maybe you'll have better luck. I can't think of what else that canister would be there for, maybe as an expansion tank? Hope this at least gives you something to work with.
Yes, its a 72...Wonder what would happen if I just ripped it out and plugged all those lines??? I cant find anything on this can....Are there any restore guys out there that can figure this out? Or should I start a post on this can?
ITS CALLED A FUEL SEPARATOR!!! Guess it only came on the Calif Cars. NOW, how do I get the smell to go away? And do I really need it if I cant get the smell to go away? Or do I just buy a gas tank that doesnt need it? Nastyz28, someone said they are worth a FORTUNE and very hard to find...

If that canister isn't leaking, I'd leave it alone. You have an open vent hose under the hood where the charcoal can was connected. Naturally, you're going to smell gas fumes as pressure inside the tank builds and burps the fumes out that hose. Normally, the charcoal can would absorb the fumes, and another hose from there went to the carb. You can try corking up that open hose, then replace the gas cap with a vented style. Do the emissions police still inspect your car though? Doing that could be a problem with them.
Can i remove it? And if so, What do i do with the open vent lines now? And How would I get the tank to vent properly? Thinking if nobody knows, I may just replace the hoses that connect to it and see if that helps. It takes in the vapors and sends the condensation back to the fuel tank.
And I wouldnt know if it was leaking, cuz it just has vapors in it, not liquid. So may just replace the rubber hosing to it and see if that does anything...Hey 69, do you have that black canister up front? If not, what did you do with that open line that goes to it?
Yeah, getting smogged is what I was asking. I understand you can't "see" a leak at the can, but can you smell anything if you put your sniffer up to it? The 69 didn't have a sealed fuel system with a charcoal can, it uses a vented gas cap.
