Default STRONG gas smell

Have strong gas smell inside trunk and it creeps into car after driving it a mile or two...Car does not have that charcoal can in front...that line is just left open floating under hood. Also, could it be coming from that silver can behind rear seat? What is that can used for? Do I need that can? it has 4 fuel lines going to it...Can anyone help? Also what do i do with that open vent line thats supposed to be hooked up to the charcoal can?

There should be no fuel related devices in the passenger compartment or trunk of the car. If you have a "can" back there it may be some one rigging the emissions of your car. You should be OK running without a charcoal canister if you are using a carb that does not have a vent you should be OK removing it. Make sure you seal any lines that were going to the tank.

but the can looks stock...its behind the rear seat....the lines go from fuel tank, to the canister. it was bolted behind the rear seat with some type of thick gasket. the holes were threaded...but i cannot find ANYTHING about this can. ill try and post pics of it. WHAT DO I DO WITH THE OPEN LINE that was hooked up to the charcoal can? do i leave it open there?

Someone said if I plug that line, the gas smell will remain because pressure builds up in the tank and it has to be released. And if there is no where for the pressure to go, then it will leak out wherever it can, most likely thru the sending unit gasket.

Yeah, that someone was me in another thread. The missing charcoal canister is what the gas tank vented into. You have/had a sealed fuel system (non-venting gas cap). Do not cork off that open hose that was connected to the charcoal can, or you will build up tank pressure and start leaking gas from wherever it can. That other "silver can" behind the seat (assuming you're talking about in the trunk behind the "backrest" and not outside behind the "seat") doesn't sound factory, but who knows. For that, we definitely need pictures.

Where do the lines connect to it, from underneath, outside the car?
Don't miss my other response above.

Are you in, or is your car a California car? If it is, I think I know what that can is.
