Sputters and Dies... please help

I don't have much more to add except at this point my engine seems to be getting worse by the day. the 327 my neighbor had, was a 307 sooooo I said no thank you. not to mention it miserably failed a compression check.
I did take my car to a mechanic just to see what he would say. Without really digging into it he couldn't say much except that its obvious to him that I'm running REALLY rich. He took the air filter off and covered the carb with his hands, my idle went up and he said "yea... that should make your car die"
I'm not sure why that is but apparently this isn't a good thing.

if it runs better when he hand choked it then you have a fuel shortage or vacuum leak. check for a plugged fuel line or filter, theres a screen/filter on most carburetors at the fuel inlet. check it, you may have a float that is set to low. on the other side make sure all your vacuum lines and make sure the carb fits right on the manifold and make sure its got the right gasket. sometime people will put a carb or gasket thats not mating to the intake and lets air in.

Vacuum advance sticking.are you using ported or manifold.other vacuum leaks.trottle plates open so that it is of idle.what is engine rpm how many inches of vacuum.only way it can run on is it getting frel and spark.is coil shut of with key.hope some of this helps
