Default New 79 z28 owner. Any suggestions??

Alright, so about a couple months ago, i traded my 95 camaro for this 79 z28. The previous owner recently put a new 350 engine in it (and i believe, other then the engine of course, the car is all stock with no modification). Being that im new to the mechanics of cars, the problem is that i dont know the specifications of the engine and i also dont really know if its even a 350... every time i race my friend who owns a 78 (all stock as well) with an aftermarket 350, he always beats me. Could it be because his exhaust was cut up to the muffler???
And id also like to know what modifications could i do to increase horsepower but not effect my MPG's? Are there any mods that could actually help increase my MPG? how much would it all cost me? I was first thnking of installing a cam and lifter kit, but i heard that they have a significant increase in gas consumption...

I forgot to also add that, due to my weak idling and possibly even loss of power, i believe i need a new carburetor. But still, i have no clue what to shop for when it comes to the cost, sparing my MPG and even increasing power.. Lol, i cant even tell if i have a 650, 750, etc carb... I'd really appreciate the help guys, Thanks!

I'm not saying this to be a *** or anything but if you wanted gas milage you should have keep the 4th gen, sorry but thats the truth, with more power comes Compromises, you can either go for good street abilty or build it to beat the other guy, sorry but some times you cant get both.

But the only way i think you can go faster with out using more gas all the time is to get a shot of nitrous oxide, and have your car tuned up.

that should give you the boost you need to beat ur budy in less he is kicking ur *** then you might need a little more help.

But if your really worried about gas milage then go buy a yota or some fuel effecent car so you car mod the hell out of your camaro, cause your all ways gonna wann go faster and you will eventually only be worring about is how many gallons you'll use per a mile lol.

Here are the numbers i found on the carb: 62967B, 48904, and 32712

Heres the casting number & Date (found them under driver side valve cover) I also found (near the rear) a number like this GM 26 or i think GM 27..

Pic of carb brand (Rochester Quadra jet) if it would help...

One thing that will help a bit with more power is to lose the stock exhaust manifolds and install a set of long tube headers with a true dual exhaust system.I got a set of headers and full exhaust with mufflers from jegs for around $250.

And installing headers and a good exhaust system is probably one of the few improvements that will add performance and increase gas mileage too. (that is if you can keep your foot out of the throttle!)

Keep in mind if your gona rebuild the engine like that you may need to buy a new torque converter.Im not really sure what your planning on doing. Also you cant expect to get great MPG's with high horsepower so you have to choose what you want. A fast car or a car thats good on gas.
