Default 327 is toast - best budget options for replacement?

My son's '81 Camaro started out as a v-6, but we swapped in a 327 that is now toast. Could look into having the engine rebuilt by a local shop, but wanted to know what crate motors would be the best option? I've done some google searches but thought I'd call on the collective wisdom of the forum instead of relying on google.

Not looking to make tons of power, but something in the 350 hp range would be great. Will probably put a 350 ci engine in it, unless I decide to rebuild the 327. Haven't torn into the 327 yet to determine exactly how bad the damage is, but based upon what I've observed and heard I'm thinking it threw a rod.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

It is tuff to beat the Base GM Crate truck 350. It is only 260 HP but that is a lot more HP then most people truly have. You could put it in, drive it for awhile. The stock bottom end can handle 350 HP no problem. A new Cam and some head work will get you well over 300 hp.

As you can see the price jumps pretty quickly when you buy the performance engines.

Just a Goodwrench engine should do like a 290 HP 350 ,And or one of the other ones. Its up to you and your pocketbook.
