1978 Belt problems.
I have a 1978 camaro with a 305 and i cant for the life of me to get the belts to stop squealing. It usually only does it when I first start it and after i drive it for a bit it will quit. I have tightened them, and sprayed belt adhesive on them but they will not quit squealing. They are practically brand new belts to. Can anyone help me?

sounds like the alternator is overworking at first startup. i wonder if the alternator is rated for more amps than the belt will handle. what amp alternator is it? a bad battery can also overwork the charging system at first startup.

OoOoOoooo don't put belt dressing on it unless there is a slipping issue and it's to get you out of a jam.
I know this will sound weird. Remove the belt and put it back on such that it is rotating the opposite direction that it was previously. Mark the belt though so you don't put it back on in the same direction.
You might want to clean your pulley grooves while you have the belt off with an alcohol based cleaner, or not.

i thought i was the only one even with my new 350 my belts keep coming loose it must be something to do with the stock mounts they have got to be the problem because ive got new everything but mounts and no matter how tight i get my belts they always loosin up i torque the bolts down as tight as i can and the bolts never loosin just the belt at first i thought it was my pulleys but i replaced all of them and my alternater and mine does it most when its humid or cold out. like i said it did it with the old motor and the new with old snd new pulleys

are they losening or wearing out? if the pullies are not lined up right you will eat belts. is it one belt or both that are slipping? try taking one off to see if one doesnt slip. that would at least narrow the problem area a little.

Ok. I tried what Buckeye69 said. I Switched my belts around, and took a wire brush and some degreaser to the pulleys. And it worked!!! for now. the true test will come tomorrow morning when its a bit chilly out and the engine is nice and cold.
Heartbeat Jr. I would try the same thing that Buckeye69 said. Its worth a shot.
thanks everyone!

Best if could actually see where it is leaking from. Remove all plugs and look for wet plugs or coolant in combustion chamber. Do a compression check, bad gasket will show low compression on one or more cylinders. Two adjacent cylinders with low compression indicates gasket blown between them.
The sign of a bad freeze out plug is a leak. You need to look more, lol.

Here's a trick that I've done to stop squealing on the worst situations. Remove the belt and take some 100-120 grit sandpaper and scuff the pulleys up. After getting rid of the polished surface on the pulleys; reinstall the belt and adjust. Always works for me.
