Hey everyone,

My names Mark, I have a 1979 Camaro and I'm having a few issues, the biggest problem is tire rub on the rear end.

I have 295/50/15s on the back and currently have to use shackles to keep the tires from rubbing any time i hit a bump, I was hoping that you guys could give me some advice on the best way to go about it.

I'm using the original leaf springs that came with the car so i know i need to get some new ones, I was hoping to find some with a 1.5" lift but haven't had any luck.

I was Told both shackles and air shocks would be detrimental to the car in the long run so I'd like to avoid that if i could.

Soany advice is much appreciated

 

Any chance on swapping out the rims? I have 315s on my car with no rub.

 

I really don't think you need 1.5" more leaf springs. I bet your original springs have enough age and sag that just going to new multileaf springs will give you what you need. Might even be able to fab up rear shackles that are only slightly longer than stock once you change to good new springs.
I built shackles for my '71 that were 2" longer than stock, and gave me an inch of clearance, and with new springs I went 2" lowering springs to get back to a more stock height. I'd get the new springs and install them first. Then use the shackels you have to see how it sits. If it's too high, then simply drill new holes in those shackles and cut the excess off them.

 

What's the dimensions on your rims? If i could find a pair to swap out I'd be happy, currently i have center lines on it.

And new leafs might help but with the shackles i have i can't put tailpipe tips on it so all that exhaust starts eating away my bushings. Hoping that i can find a good set of leafs, any set you recommend?

Thats rims and tire sizes, if i didnt have new springs on my car i bet the back end would sit down nice and low. Check my page for pictures

 

I'd reroute the tailpipes if they are exiting on the bushings. That needs to be fixed regardless of what you do.

 

Rims with better back spacing would help.

 

Well I would like to know exactly where the tire is making contact. I use 15x10 wheels with 5.5" Back space then add a small rim spacer like 1/4" to give a total of 5.25" Back space. for BFG P295 / 50 R15. Also you should use a board and or mallot/hammer on the rear seat belt humps for more clearance and check shock bolt clearance to wheel or it could cut a 15" wheel in half like a lathe if it has too much back space. more than enough back space is ideal not enough and there is nothing you can do to change the wheel fitment, besides replacing wheel or get the correct wheels. Note 15x8 squishes the tire more causing less clearance on it than the 15x10. 15x8's I hear need 4.5" Bs to be centered correctly and its tighter than 15x10's may need fenderlip roll etc. Tell us the exact point of contact.Sorry you already did say, my bad. Just had to think about it.

The Tires seem to be rubbing on the bottom third of the wheel wells. I rolled the top 2/3 of the fender and it does it less often and less severe but it was still an issue.
