Any one have any luck getting crash bars out of the doors without killing paint or door skin? Seen tons of threads on this but most are done before car was done.My 76 still has them and i need to get the car lighter.. or get a bigger motor..lol.thanks

 

Mine are out, but the car is not done. The door skins look fine too.

 

For what little they save in weight it would be easier to add a few HP, than chance damaging the paint or door.

 

Let alone the bodily damage that would be done to you if you were ever broadsided. Like he said though, it'd be easier and safer to just add a few HP.

 

I agree, unless you have a 10pt cage or better. And then I still think a t-bone would get ugly, just look some where else to save weight.

I have thought about drilling mine with a hole saw to save my door hinges but never remove them. They are structural to the car. They help keep the body from buckling when you gas it. Thats a huge distance between the A pillar and the B pillar. Without the beam your relying on the sheet metal and the floor pan to keep things square.

Not sure they're all that structural since eary 2nd gens didn't have them. They definitely were a good safety feature addition on later 2nd gens though.

 

Thanks for your input,the car is a street/strip beater with a cage.Im just looking to shed some weight,its almost 3500#. I have done all the easy stuff to shed weight,except cutting interior.that may have to be next..or a bigger motor..

 

I like the body colored cage. Tell me thats not a fuel line to the gauge on the column. I look into cheap tubular control arms if its a strip ride. The beefy ones I have are still 5# lighter. Total I dropped 30# or so with the arms. Aluminum rad, race weight brakes, and all the crap behind the bumpers. Another member just gutted his, I can't remember the savings but it was big.

Read the list and see what you can dump.

 

I'd be guessing it's an oil line from the markings on the gauge face.

 

yes its an oil gauge inside,the fuel is outside on cowl by windshield. I have some weight off the front bumper,braces etc..but have not had the back one off yet to take a look, but i will now..i have heard about 75# back there.I drive it more than race it and my farm roads out here would kill lightweight chassis parts lol..
