79 Camaro Project
#11
I am not sure that I can upgrade the rear end, I know it is strong enough from what I have read, and it is an option to swap gears. But what would be easier is to swap rear ends, especially if I can come up with one at a junk yard or a swap meet. This car is still in the early stages of being a project and there is no hurry to get this done. But it would be nice knowing what would fit. I am going to go and measure the overall length and the spring perch length and keep it with me so I know what to look for. Mainly my wanting to have a list would be to keep my eyes open for a wreck or something for cheap that could have a compatible rear end in it that I could buy and just junk.

You're pretty much stuck with 2nd gen Camaros or Firebirds as donor rear axles. Earlier Camaros, or Novas use narrower rear axles. Later don't use leaf springs.

Will have to keep my eyes open. Took off radiator shroud and bumper today, getting ready to pull apart the a arms and swap springs and bushings. Tomorrow I am getting another set of jack stands to get the front in the air, and I am going to pull the trans out to change the seals and clean it up. Then set it aside so I can get to the firewall.

More Progress.
Couple of holes...
Removing all sealer for replacement...
Trunk Finished-ish
Beginning to sand on firewall, still need to drop tranny.
Head on without radiator shroud and bumper.
Rims Painted Black
Last but not least
Possibly found a 4.10 rear end for $185 bucks, going to check on that, it would be nice...

The first pic looks colorful. As for a powerplant, 350 bored 30 over, need to tear into it to get more information on it though, will be rebuilding it once the body work is done. Has a 350 turbo trans as well, I want a different rear end for it.

You might need to find a reprint of the factory assembly manual. Not sure if Biscay's has one for that year, but you could call and ask them. 360-273-6520
Is that rust in the second picture in the red area where the cowl rolls over? If the rust is limited to just the holes, and the rest of the rusty areas are just surface rust, you might get away with just 18 ga. patches of sheetmetal, and not pans.

The entire car was sanded to bare metal when my father in law bought it, there was no rust. Pulling out the back seats I found the two spots on the floor pan in the back, and grinding through some of the carpet leftovers, there was a small spot in the passenger side front floorboard. I am leaning towards a pan for the back and a patch for the front. I am going to ultimately leave it up to my father in law, he wants me to clean those areas up real good so he can assess them better.
It sucks, i am away for a 3 day traing course and cannot work on it for a bit. This weekend I will be painting the house barring no rain.

Been taking a break to do some research. Since this is my first rodeo, I felt that I was probably wasting a bit of time deciding how to do things so I am reading a few restoration books. I did take some time to photoshop the color scheme I want for the car though. Opinions? I am sort of not liking it.
