Exclamation 1979 Original Project Thread

Hey, here is my 1979 Camaro, totally original and 100% complete. The original owners bought this car, and drove it on weekends in the summer, then parked it in the garage. The husband has since past away, so the wife sold it to a guy I know. Right away he pulled the motor and started to paint and chrome it up. He decided to keep working on his trans am instead, so I was lucky enough to buy this off him. It was a no brainer as I have always wanted this gen. of Camaro, but especially one that has never been tampered with. I wanted to start fresh! This thing has the original spare, to all the original paper work! It was Z barred and under coated, so it has no rust, and the interior is mint. Only cons are the head liner sags and the middle counsil is a bit cracked, big deal! Seens winter is near, I got it put away in the shop, and while the motor is out, I am going to rebuild it. I am thinking about doing a cam, intake and exhaust work, then putting in a bigger rear end. I think thats all it needs for now, what are your thoughts? Also in the near future i'll save up to have it painted. Thats it for now! Enjoy, and leave lots of comments and suggestions!!!

Welcome aboard, nice project you have there. Thats in great shape for a canadian car lol. I would imagine that the motor is original to, maybe a 267 or 305? I would suggest not bothering with the rebuild and just get a 350 or something? GL and keep us updated.

No kidding, its a rare find in that shape up here!!!! It's a 305 motor. Thats where I was sitting unsure what to do. I think I will rebuild it and shine it up and in a couple years I'll put in a big crate motor or something along those lines. I'm not out to get a fast quarter mile YET but I'll always be adding to the car to improve it.

good find, keep in mind you will put about as much into rebuilding as it will cost for a shortblock. welcome to the forum.

depending on how much h/p you have when you do put a bigger motor you might want to look into sub frame connectors. and a bigger rad will be ideal for any 350 for overheating issues.

That would be a rare find in most of the U.S. as well haha.Looks like you have a very easy project ahead of you since you dont have to do any rust repair like most of us do.Nice find by the way.

Thanks.
I think I will rebuild the orig. 305 thats out of it already and all cleaned up, then re paint and keep chroming it. I'll use this motor for next summer and get a feel for the car, I'll then have a better idea what I want to do with it. Paint is the next big thing. Then probably change the rear end. Any gear ideas? Also it needs a rad, so I'll go with something decent right away. Also I'll change the brake master cylinder etc, as you can see, it IS rusting out. What else do you think I should do, if this car was yours?

Hey guys. I decided after all that yes, it is to obvious, to rebuild a 350 from the get go, then to mess with the 305. Having a 350 sitting here, and knowing all the chrome off my 305 will go onto my 350, it leaves me with the obvious answer to go with the 350 rebuild for it. OK OK I know, this is way to obvious of a solution! I was looking on summitracing.com and a 350 rebuild kit is about 250 bucks american, the dollar is good right now, so it won't be much more canadian for me. Has anyone else shopped on summit? and where is your favorite online place to go? my local guys cant come close to that price, but I can understand why, so that is ok. I'm looking into quotes for a paint job. any suggestions on color, that will go good with the red interior? Thanks about all for now. Thats for reading!
