1979 Camaro sport coupe changes
 

I"ve owned this Camaro now for approx3.5yrs. That's when my father sold it to me for a dollar. Its been in the family since 82.
I'm slowly changing it the way I've always envisioned it and the first thing was the rear wheels and tires, now I'm working on changing the weak oil burning 305 over to a nice mild performance 355. Old motor is out and the new motor should be going in this weekend. Then the trac bars are next along with the rear sway bar that I bought from a guy at work for cheap, they just need paint.

Installed the motor last night. Had some trouble lining up the tranny, but it all worked out with a little patience. Spent what ever time was available today hooking things back up and re routing some stuff, seeings as this motor is a little different.

Everything was going so well until I got the passenger side header installed and found out the collector is right against the floor boards. Called the shop where I bought them from and he has another set on order for me, and hope fully its better.

Man that sure doesn't look right! I hope it's just a screw up in manufacturing, and not something the replacement will have. Sometimes certain brands have an issue, and every set will have the same problem if it's their jig. Had that happen with Patriot BBC fenderwell headers. Every set was 1.5" too wide on the passenger side. I finally gave up and used them.

New Flowtech hdrs came in, and the passenger side is the exactly the same as the one I took back. Looks like I'll have to heat the primary tube ends down by the collector and get the 1-1/8" clearance i need to clear the floor pan.

Is the motor setting correct in the engine bay? Are the motor mounts the same? I used hooker headers on my 78 with no problem. Good luck figuring this out!

The motor mounts are new and yes the motor is sitting straight. The driver side hdr is perfect it's only the pass. Side that's giving me grief. When you lay the 2 hdrs side by side the collector on the pass. Side hdr is to high by 1 1/4". I'll be heating it to bring it down.
The passenger side hdr is the one on the bottom in the pic.

This sounds exactly like one of those jig issues where the header manufacturer is building every set wrong, and hasn't addressed the issue. As long as people keep fixing it themselves and not letting Flowtech know, they'll never adjust their jig to make the correction.
I'd contact them personally and let them know the issue you have. They may make the adjustment to yours, or a new pass. side header and send it to you.

I see a few ways out of this. Heat it up and put a pipe in the collector while its in the car and pull or cut the collector off in the middle and wedge cut it and reweld. Of wait for another ill fitting set in the mail.If you have 3/4" or so to the floor pan it could work as is too. Call Hedman and get theirs! They are the best fitting second gen header I've seen or heard about.

BTW that big bracket on the trans mount was for the converter. You can take it off and get more room.
