Hey,

I am decently new with camaros but i have just traded for a 1974 Camaro with an automatic trans and aggressive street built motor. I need someone to help with finding and installing a windshield in the Raleigh/Benson, NC area. Also I want to put a manual transmission in the camaro and was wondering what trans would be better. I prefer a 6-speed but I would be willing to try anything.

Tranny depends on what you are going to be using the car for.
A 6-speed would be fun around town and a circle track, but I
wouldn't want one in the quarter mile. I am still playing with the
idea of a built 700r4, but I just bought a very well built TH350.

If I had to have a manual and was running the quarter I would
get an old M22.

I just called a local glass shop for a window. They are still in
production so anyone can get one.

 

No rocket science to putting in a new windshield, and most the major national shops can give you a good deal. I went to a local Speedy Auto Glass and got mine for $200, including installation. The guys did a very nice job of cleaning, prepping, painting, and installing the glass.

Safelite auto glass is good I think I've heard. They come to you and put it in too. As for changing to a manual transmission from an auto... I think you need to alter your transmission tunnel, and get a firewall section from a manual car and put it in the auto car.

 

Not sure you really need a section of firewall. Many people have simply cut the firewall for the clutch linkage and were fine. I would find a stick car to take measurements or make a template off of before cutting holes though!

 

Heres what to do. On your firewall just below the brake booster there is a 2 1/2" hole with a sheet metal cap over it. Two sheet metal screws hold it in. Later cars only had a dimple where the screws went. For a stock appearing swap you'll need a hump for the tunnel. These are available new for about 80 bucks. Check my build thread for details on the way I drilled the hole in my firewall. Other than that you'll need all the other crap. Pedals ect.
