what to look for in a used rear end?

I paid $175 for a drum to drum "3:42" that turned out to be a 3:23, that I have to change out the backing plates/drums etc. on. So, yeah you probly got a solid deal. Just my .02

I think your ok. I sold a 12 bolt 3.73 out of my 76 nova 10 years ago to a guy at my new job. 75 bucks. The first thing I said when I saw him was if it was for sale again because i knew it wouldn't fit his 67 camaro. Of course he had it all along and sold it just this spring. I kick myself alot for that but he hit me right after I got laid off from another job 10yrs ago, so I sold it.

The moral is these rears are getting harder to find everyday. Less than 200 is a good score in my book. Posi is the only thing I would have cared about. Stock ring and pinions are still common.

ok thanks guys. yeah i guess 160 wasn't bad even though it wasn't 3.42's. I'm gonna try and install it tomorrow. and 77Nomad, that really sucks about that 12 bolt. man that's a killer deal. too bad you had to sell it
