Fought with the crankshaft keyway from hell. Made too many trips in to town to get more parts and tools. Almost got the four speed swap done. Tranny is in and mounted to something now. Atleast I don't have to have the jack under it all the time now. Detector nice job. Your coming along good.

Dj Aztek 07-09-2010 01:04 PM

quick question are 70s with a 400 trany are they 3 or 4 speed:icon_teeth:

77nomad 07-09-2010 02:08 PM

Any TH400 is a three speed, unless someone hung and Gear Venders OD unit in the back of it. You know one of those when you see it. The price alone will give it away. I've never seen one in person.

Did nothing on the Camaro, but brought my narrowed 10 bolt home for the Chevy powered Austin and slapped some wheels on it to check overall width.
Still need to find a couple of Camaro spring plates so I can drop this rearend under the Austin!

I took my youngest son(21 yo) out for a drive. Between a double 360 and a couple burn-outs we must have left at least 3,000 miles of rubber on the county road.

As Camaro69 said, that's an Anglia, but my 46 Austin is very similar. And that's the look I'm going for when it's done too. Only real difference on the Austin is a more vertical grille and horizontal bars.
My rear tires hang out about 2"-3" with the narowed 10 bolt. I'm trying to find a narrow enough front axle without having to have one custom built. Narrowest one Speedway sells is 52" face to face on the rotors, and my front sheetmetal is 55" wide. That would mean a 3" wheel with 50-50 backspacing would work, but I'd like a bit wider for street use. I have a pair of 5" ET slots and wanted to use those if possible.

77nomad 07-10-2010 08:45 AM

Opps, I thought yours was an Anglia to begin with. So now that I see them side by side they really do look alike. I would offer up some spring perches for you but if I do rip the rear end out of the 78, I don't know if the junk yard will be able to get it on the roll back. If you guys have any ides on how to keep it safely in the air on dirt and still get it out of here with out a torch let me in on it. No front or rear suspention would make one heck of a gouge in my dads yard.

With all that being said, Vall if I can figure this out you can have the perches for shipping.

1971BB427 07-10-2010 08:52 AM

Thanks Damon, but I need spring plates, not perches. I found perches at the trailer supply locally. I'm headed out to a wrecking yard today to get some Camaro or Nova spring plates, so hopefully I'll get the rearend under the Austin this morning!

77nomad 07-10-2010 09:21 AM

Cool, I'm meant plates. Dunno why my mind was on perch. Mmm perch. I'm supposed to be up North camping and fishing with my dad, but the little woman needs a me to keep an eye on the kids for the yardsale. I'm bummed. Last day of my vacation too.

Dj Aztek 07-11-2010 08:24 PM

come on guys let's keep this tread alive. lol

Ok, well Sat. I had a show to go to, so I washed the Camaro for the first time since last Nov. Wasn't really dirty, but dusty and needed a good detailing. In the morning I got to the wrecking yard and bought some spring plates from a Nova to use for the Austin project gasser.
Today (Sun.) my friend and I tore the Austin to pieces and got the narrowed Dutchman 10 bolt under it. Still need to set the ride height, pinion angle, and weld the perches, but it was a great start!
I also got the front sheetmetal off so I can access the engine for installing the SBC, and weld the frontend together to make it a steel tilt frontend. We played with some mock up tires and wheels to see what it might look like, but the little 14" rears looked funny. I'd like to steal my buddy's front tires, but he wont let them go! ;)
Here's a couple pics:

Dude thats is a car after my heart. Ugly (in a good way) cheap, light and fast. I toyed with the idea of 60somethin Datsun diesel pickup. The estate selling it thought it was gold though. It was so small I was gonna build one seat in the middle. I loved the 65HP badges on it. Turns out another guy I know bought it and put it on a s10 frame for his kid.

B.M. 07-12-2010 03:41 PM

I actually finally did a little work on my car this weekend haha.I pulled off the rear pieces, not sure what they are called, the parts on a 78-81 that covers the edges of the rear bumper cover where it meets the quarter panel.Anyway pulled those off to get them sanded and get the rust off and found that the studs that hold them on were so rusted they were almost non existent,so i spent a few hours making and welding new studs.I figure the original set lasted 30 years so i should be good for another 30 now haha.

Thanks Damon! It is a body that grows on you, and I'm growing fonder of it as I go along. Definitely cheap and lightweight! I hope to end up under 3,000 lbs when it's all done. Even an average SBC should move pretty well at that weight.

77nomad 07-13-2010 03:14 PM

I do't see an issue getting under 3000#. I got the Chevy II down to 2775# with me in it. So, just a tick under 2600#. With a 13:1 355, Lunati solid roller in the 630's, an d the same heads I have right now, I was running consistant 10.5's. Also had a Coan 'glide and 4.56s. With a 150 shot it went 9.97. Once. That solid axel should pucker you up at 120. LOL

1971BB427 07-13-2010 09:49 PM

Yeah, I've had two '57 and one '55 Chevy with straight axles, and it can get busy at over 100 mph with them! They're better if they're aftermarket, rather than '55-'59 Chev truck axles like I always used in my old tri 5's.

77nomad 07-14-2010 06:33 AM

I drove one 57 pickup that still had the straight axel. Never went fast in it, but it seemed to like the cracks in the pavement as is just wanted to keep going for them.

My heater box is going to be delivered today. Really curious to see if its crap or not. Also supposed to get some headlight covers I bought for 15 bucks delivered too.

gfrench 07-14-2010 08:22 AM

Put my interior in after getting camaro back from the welder. He installed my 8-point cage. Also put in a lot of carpet padding, fixed a header leak, carpeted the trunk, painted the tail lights and some other stuff.

77nomad 07-14-2010 03:13 PM

Does that cage go through the speaker holes? I want one but want speakers too.

gfrench 07-15-2010 09:49 AM

No, it is about an inch to the outside of the holes.

I started with these:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CEE-3000/
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CEE-3121/

Then, I had the welder bend the rear braces so they would trace the back window.
I wanted to keep the back seat for my 7 yr old.

Sorry, about the reflection.

77nomad 07-15-2010 03:49 PM

Cool. I would ask what you paid but it wouldn't make a diff. in my neck of the woods.

gfrench 07-15-2010 04:07 PM

cage was $169 from summit with $100 something for shipping.
another $500 to install it. $75 of that was for the bent seat belt mount.
Look really clean.

77nomad 07-15-2010 04:40 PM

That works out to the hundred bucks a point that the shop quoted. I think I'll go that route. The guys around here can tuck in better I think, then a kit that is just prefab. I don't want it to be seen outside the car.

As you guys know my Camaro is done, so today I got back on the Austin gasser project. I disassembled all the sheetmetal up front yesterday and cleaned and painted all the joints. Today I reassembled it all and bolted everything together to form a one piece steel tilt frontend.
After getting it all solid, I built the hinge pieces and bolted them to the body. After that I set the sheetmetal assembly on the car and installed the hinge pins. It wont tilt all the way forward yet as I still have theose big old stock tires and wheels and it hits them. But my new Speedway gasser axle with GM discs is on the way, and then I can mount up my old skinnies and slots so it will fully open!

And just for fun; this is my neighbor's 1948 Austin gasser. Just two years newer, but totally different body!
