Default U-Joints - Anyone Know The difference?

I have a 1970 350/th350 base model camaro with a 1978 3.23 posi rear. The yoke on the rear is different from the original. Are the u-joints in the driveshaft the same between years? I put what seems to be the correct u-joint for 1970 in the shaft, but it is too small for the yoke. The guys at NAPA say the part number is the same for 1978. Does this sound right? Any help is appreciated!

The yoke on the 1978 rear is original, just different from the 1970 yoke. Sorry, typed too fast. The 1978 rear uses yolk straps to hold the u-joint in place, the 1970 had u-bolts.

i'm telling on myself, but dont mess up and leave the c-clips off the the caps.bad mistake with disasterous results(LOL).every rearend i have messed with had the little tabs on the side of the yoke, never even dawned on me to put the c-clips in there, thought it was strange that it didnt have the tabs on there.50 cents cost me hundreds

It's called a jump joint Spicer makes them and any driveline shop will have it I think it's a 3R to 1310 jump joint but I'm not certain it's been too long. Parts guys get confused to easy when you try to tell them what you need. You could also try changing the pinion yoke to the proper series yoke. I'd check with a local driveline fab shop. If I can find it I'll hit you with a Spicer number.

Thanks for the help, the numbers were right on. I did some research and found the series numbers you suggested to be correct. The part number for a 1978 u-joint is a 3R series and the 1970 u-joint is a 1310 series. I went to the local driveline shop as suggested - they had two on the shelf. I just asked for a 1310-3R conversion joint, in about a minute I was on my way. Put it in and fits perfect.

You're right about the parts guys being confused! Anyway, thanks again.
