Default Timing Issues!

Hey,

Alright I have a 67 with a 327 in it and when it was running before it sounded like it was missing pretty bad, and in this cold weather when I tried to start it, it kept on back firing out of the carburator, took forever to start. So I checked the timing and it was about 12 deg. retarded, so I adjusted it to zero and now it seems like it's running worse! It's smoother, but feels like it doesn't have as much power and is really slugish. My friend told me that advancing it will give me more power, but I'm not sure. He has a race car with a 400 in it, mine's just a stock 327. I need help on what I sould do now. It does have a point system ignition in it right now, so I'm sure I need to get an HEI, but I don't know if that will fix the problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Brandon

You should have it set at like8 BTDCfor a 4barrel and 2 BTDCfor a 2 barrel and the points gap 0.016. Have you checked the points? Are they burned or closed? And check the timming with the vacuum pinched off.
I would suggest a MSD distributer. I think the GM HEIs have clearance issues and you would have to hammer the firewall a little.
