Theft Protection
 

I have a 80 camaro and not terribly familiar if this is a sought after car for the underground.

I am starting to fix her up but I dont want to be fixing it up for someone else.
I dont want to fix it up and it be like sending a bombshell girlfriend into a biker bar on bike night!

Is there weaknesses to the 2nd Gen like easy to hot wire or anything? Any suggestions for added security?

At home my security is a locked garage and a 12 gauge shotgun.
Other than that I do not park it in public for long periods of time or far out of sight.
An alarm is also a good Idea.

An alarm is one option,but if the thief is good enough and fast enough they can get around them.especially since the hood latch on these cars is on the outside.One of the better options i've seen is a kit where you can remove the steering wheel when parked,kinda hard to steal a car if you cant steer it,i think that kit is only like $70 at jegs or summit.

I keep mine in sight or garaged all the time. I've also got a battery disconnect that wont let it start if I have the switch key in my pocket. Nothing is foolproof, but I hate to see mine go away so I never travel overnight unless I can have a garage to park in where I'm at overnight.

Well, I'll confess a little embarassing personal info. When I was 14 or so a buddy and I hear some other kids talking about stealing cars. So we had to be the baddest kids on the block and we started our own little mini chop shop out of his girlfriends moms garage. I regret it and am straight and narrow now. I got caught and payed my restitution, but thats another story.

With that being said we got good. ANY car made before they started putting computers in them can be stolen in minutes with a hammer and screwdriver. Seconds with a dent puller and a screwdriver. Second gens are particularly easy because the door doesn't have a window frame and "peeling" the window back and slipping a hand down and unlocking a door is cake. A little crumb of a broken spark plug insulation flicked a car window will shatter it without much noise.

Her are some good tricks to keep joyriders from taking it, pros are a different breed and if want it they'll probably get it.

pull the power from the dizzy, electric fuel pump w/ hidden switch, batt disconnect like Val, steering wheel deal that b.m. mentioned there in Summit, pull the coil wire, a good alarm with proximity protection, don't leave anything in sight in the car that someone may want, one of those clubs that locks the brake down from the steering wheel, could even put a toggle switch inline between the key and the starter to break the circuit.Then hide the switch. A ball valve in the fuel line would work too.

^^^ once you do all that, get some lug locks. I would hate to have anything stolen off my car again. A thief took my air breather, valve covers, breather and wing screws. All the stuff was easy to take off.

The Austin has no door locks. This may be a solution to locking them up!;)

Just paint the chain and lock the same color as the car and nobody will ever know haha,or better yet get them in chrome and just say they are accessories lol.

LOL I kept a couple secrets. Like the Kamoto Dragon sleeping in the front seat.

Growing up our niegborhood was so crappy that my dad had to do the same thing to the hood of his Scout II just so his battery wouldn't walk away.
