temp gauge
It should be cold with no power. Its basically a thermistor. It changes resistance with heat. The gauge just shows the resistance. Pull the temp sender and if its reading cold. (on the stock gauge) use a lighter or some other heat source to see if you can peg the gauge. If you can I'd say its ok. Also it should be the green wire, just in case.
I have had internet chats with Daniel @ Gaugeworks. He is very nice. He quoted me $200 to blast mine repaint (any color) and reapply the decals. Then he was going to move the stock red line up to 6500 for me. Then set the odometer back to zero. Then swap the clock for in oil pressure gauge, it absolutely looks like it came from the factory.

Hello everyone, I have a 1980 z28 with a 383 stroker that I built. Engine has thruroughly cleaned at the machine shop, coolant passages were clean. The radiator was replaced with an aluminum 3 core radiator with polimer tanks on the sides, water pump is a new stock replacement for sbc. Thermostat is a 160. I struggled to find the correct sending unit in parts stores, they all showed them with a newer connector on the top, but when I finally found one with the button style, It didn't quite match what I thought was the correct part number. Temp always read 220, and even climbed up to 230 on a cruise event in my town. Pulled over because I thought it would over heat. Out of curiosity, I installed a mechanical Guage, Temps read at a steady 160-170 and have never gone above 190 in traffic. Not sure what to trust. Any suggestions or information would be appreciated as the next big cruise event is this upcoming weekend. Thank you.
