Default stumped in Iowa?

Maybe someone can help me? I have a 1980 z28 that I have been restoring for sometime now. long story short, I've had 2 engine harness burn from firewall to battery. Now I just installed a brand new harness, when I hook up the positive cable to battery I get a really good spark. Would it be possible that something from the first two harness burning that something could of hurt the starter or soleniod? Also I've unhooked everything I can think of that could have a open circuit

A few years ago me and a buddy of mine put a 327 in his trans am. Everytime we would try to start it, it would start smoking at the battery real bad. We didnt hook a ground wire from the engine to the firewall. Thats all it was. We took the groundwire from the firewall and found a bolt on the engine and grounded it and no more smoke. Maybe that may help. In other words make sure you have a ground wire from firewall to engine.

Thanks I'll try that. I know there is a ground wire there but maybe its not getting a good enough ground. Thanks.
