Is it the shifter itself that's sloppy, or the linkage rods? Are the rod bushings worn out? If the bushings are shot, it will make the linkage sloppy and alter the throw.

The shifter is my vote as well. I had an ITM in my 76 Nova, hung up like a turd. Try and fix the bushings as stated and maybe try to shift it lightly. I can't really decribe what I mean other than as you go from gear to gear, find neutral first then go to the next gear. Mine was so loose I could stir it. Changing gears fast would always cause problems, specially 2-3 and 1-R.

the bushings are shot and the rods seem like they are going but idk if new bushings will just make them good again. i dont have trouble going through the gears 1-4 its just reverse that is screwing me at the moment. but if im replacing the bushings i rather just put in new rods as well.

The bushings are a wear item. If the rods are worn down too, you'll be able to see a ridge where the bushings were riding and sawing at the end. If the rod ends aren't worn down, buying new ones would be money wasted.

im not sure i guess i'll just buy the bushings first and if i go to put them in and see that the rods are worn down then i'll replace them. do you know a website that has the bushings? i cant find them. idk if im looking in the wrong places or what.
