OK, i see what u mean. thanks for the help. i called a local machine shop and he said they charge between 40-50 to magnaflux the motor if i clean it well myself or 60 just to degrease and clean if they do it. so around 100 bucks for cleaning and fluxing. how clean does it need to be? i think if i just use some junk cleaner and my preassure washer i could do it my self.

Grab a casting date off the heads. That casting number (the 3 in the front doesn't show in the pic) would be 1972-73 400 76 cc chamber heads, if they're dated 72-73. That casting number was also used in 1978-84 on the 305 & 350, but then they would have been drilled. The 400 heads can be reworked to perform pretty well, but old school heads never perform as well as aftermarket heads do (unless you buy crap). Your budget will help decide which way to go. First step would be to have them checked to make sure they're not cracked, and that they're rebuildable within a reasonable budget.

First off great buy! I have a set of 624 heads (350/400) with 76cc chambers and i was told they were good but only if they were the ones that are 2.02/1.6 intake/exhaust if they are the ones that are smaller then get a diff. set if you have the cash.

Enlarging the one head pic shows a date casting "K 6 72". K=the 11th month. So that head is dated 11-6-1972. Both head dates don't always necessarily match either. The intake valves are 1.94".
The casting date on the block is that set of numbers going sideways above the casting #. I see "? 30 72". Is the ? an H? That would fall into a pretty good chronological order with the heads.

The 1'94" heads should be a good viable head, especially if keeping a budget is a priority. They'll make plenty of power and not break the bank like anything else you buy.

It's probably .010 and that would probably mean it's been turned ten thousandths under.
