Default Rear end or Transmission

I have a 79 "supposedly" z28, i don't think its a real z, but nonetheless it has the z28 decals, so im just gonna say its a z28. I have a turbo 350 transmission in it and i think the rear end gears are not the originals becuause on if i run it on highway i can't hardly hit 70 mph without doin 5k rpm. I believe the rear end is a 3.73 but if im wrong someone please correct me. Would it be better to leave the rear end like it is and just spend the big money and drop a 700 r4 in it, or to be cost effective in these economically troubled times and just put a full out highway rear end in it.

As of right now, this is my every day driver... So i really need to cut back on gas spending.

70 at 5k wow must be 410 or lower. tranys not slipping? do u know what kind of torque converter u have. its shifting up through all three speeds without any problems? go with higher gears but find out what u have first.

i believe the z28s had 3.08 locking rear ends so it probably is not z28 if you are going 70 at 5000, you definately have something that did not come from the factory. you should try to find an LT rear end that was 256.

Yea, it shifts through all the gears good. No problems yet, When i bought the car almost 3 months after i bought it, the guy kinda dumped a car on me that was definetly not what he said it was. So Im having to compinsate for everything.

jack up the rear and with the car in nutral (block wheels) and spin the tire one revolution while counting the number of times the driveshaft turns. watch to see if your tire on the other side is turning the same direction as the one u r turning. if not have someone turn it with u in the same direction. a posi will turn same direction. not posi will turn oposit direction and mess up your shaft count. if the driveshaft turns a little more than four times its 410 or 411s if 4.5 then 456s if a little over 5 then 513s.

woud it be better to just buy a full 2.73 kit, or to just go to a junk yard and find the whole rear end housing and all to put into it. And if i do that, would it ever burn the tranny up?

dont jack it up and count revolutions of the shaft because it goes through the spider gears when it is jacked up and it will throw off the counts, but leave it on the ground and just have it pushed or drive it until the tire turns one complete rotation while you have someone keep track of the rotations of the drive shaft and like wise, if it does just over 4 turns, 410s and so on and so forth.

but i would either buy one that is complete that you know everything about (gear ratio and locker or not) or buy a kit for yours (jegs sells ring and pinion kits for a really decent price and they have reasonably priced posis too)

you will spend too much buying a whole new third member and redoing it, it is cheapest to buy a complete used one that you know everything about

when buying a second gen camaro rear end, you should find a 7 digit code (ex. PCG100D), the first two letters will tell you what it is.

PA= 2.73, PC= 3.08, PH= 2.56, PT= 2.56 posi, PU= 2.73 posi, PW= 3.08 posi

the other digits indicate shift, day of year, and assembly plant

hope this helps
