Default Rear End Interchangeability

What vehicles are good matches for getting a better rear end for my 79 camaro? Ideally a direct bolt in would be nice, but moving spring perches I would think is not a big deal. I know plenty of people who can weld.

On occasion I see them going on Craigslist, but you have to be fast. It would be nice if I could watch for something out of an older stepside or something too.

If you want to keep the same width, then you're probably going to end up with a Camaro or Firebird from 1970-81. Going with a truck rear axle will normally mean it needs to be narrowed and spring perches installed.

Yes, I am not interested in narrowing it. Probably can just buy one outright I would imagine new at that rate.

Unless there's something wrong with your rear axle, it's probably cheapest to go through it and make it what you want. A whole new one set up to what you want will be a lot more than reworking your's.
