which ignition should i get? i want to get a high performance ignition as the first step to adding more power to my 81 camaro with a 350 V8. i also want to get a flowmaster exhaust system and a higher cfm carb. i just have the HEI dist now.

For a relatively "normal" engine, the HEI upgradewould be more than sufficient. The 6AL setup is nice (I have it on mine) but it's a little overkill for your needs. I think you wouldbenefit more byputting the over $400 you would save into otherperformance goodies.

I have an MSD 6AL in my 70 camaro and 68 GTO both with 350 chevys in them. I installed both of them, and they work great.Alot of guys will tell you it wont make any difference in performance from a standard engine with a standardHEI ,unless you are generating alot of HP from a high performance one. maybe, maybe not. I think it really smoothes out the Idle and increases the powerband, especially in my 70. The 6AL has the soft rev limiter controls which you may not need.

i put the 6al on my big block....and i love it. you can also get the different boxes. the 6al may be a bit much for a stock engine. but they make boxes for a more stock application like the 6b i believe. not sure. but you could go with an hei up grade. with light weight springs for full advance. it really all depends on your own specks. call summitracing and they will get you the right box. but i recomend the msd.....for the money you cant go wrong.

ok but a good point made by camaro 69, do you other guys agree that it might be a better option to go with the HEI upgrade kit and use the 400 dollars left over towards maybe exhaust or higher cfm carb? and does the HEI upgrade kit really make a difference compared to adding the 6al kit would? i know its not the same but would it really add much compared to the whole kit.

you mightseea difference by going up to the msd hei upgrade kit, since you already have an hei dist, it would be easy to do and it certainly wouldnt hurt to do that. you could split the difference and go this way
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=skualthough that would only save you a couple hundred, not really enough to upgrade exhaust or carb, and as mentioned already it may be overkill for your application. It mostly comes down to your budget like everything does. Either way you decide, MSD makes good quality products.

Stick with the HEI upgrade if you want to improve your ignition system.

What do you mean by "higher CFM carb"? A larger carb will not give you more power, just wastes your money unless you have supporting. If I were you, I would spend that money on a nice cam, a set of heads, headers, or an exhaust system as you mentioned before.
