Default Posi Tract for 79 camaro.

Would it be easier for me to find a axle off a junk yard for my camaro or buy a http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...=egnsearch.asp

Does anyone know what size axle and length or what car I should put it off of for my 79 camaro.
I'm going to have a drive shaft made to fit.

Please do not buy a powerlock or a lockright. IT WILL NOT HOLD UP, I have removed atleast four of these style lockers in the last 8mos. They all had the same failure. The drive clutch and the center pin get worn from normal use and eventually come apart in the rear end. Very expensive cause it usually takes out the gears, carrier, and sometimes the housing when it blows. First off, are you looking for an origional style rear end? then look for a 7.5 inch 10 bolt I know that Camaro's and Nova's used the same rear end atleast till '74 the rear in my Z came from a '74 Nova, the brake hose mount is the only difference, cut and weld like I did or zip tie. IF! you find a posi rear it will need clutches, and bearings. Secondly, do you wan't limited slip for ease of cornering and normal driving, or do you want positive locking, made for straight line, chirpping tires around corners, sucks on wet road swerving kinda traction? If you want limited slip, Thorsen or Auburn. If you want locking, theres only one, Detroit Locker.

By the way, What's wrong with the rear end in your car? Why not just work with it?

I had 3.73's in my '79 Z, MPG sucked, 8 to 9 on a good day, and at 65 I was turning 3100 RPM. How did you get any fuel mileage out of that? I swaped in a 3.08 rear and got the motor down to 2400 RPM, where peak torque is, and my fuel mileage went up, 15 to 17 on a good day.

see i didnt tell the whole story, i have a mildly built motor, .465 cam, and my BIG bonus is a Tremec T-56 6 speed, which really gets those RPMs down

the tranny is a kit i bought from keislerauto.com included everything from pedals to driveshaft, THE ABSOLUTE BEST investment i have ever done to any car

Hey, I checked out thier web site. Which trans kit did you get, and if you don't mind, what did you pay for it? My Z is a 4spd, so at least I won't need the pedals aor clutch linkage.

your best bet is going to be to call them, like you said youre not goning to need some of the stuff, but i think they have a section to convert to the tremec transmission, if you already have a manual stock. but give them a call and they will put a package together for you.
