Default new 79

Hey every one I am new to this forum and this is my first real project car. I do have some mechanical knowledge or at least enough to get me buy and have spent some time around shops but I am no expert in any means. I just purchased a 79 camaro with a rebuilt camed 350 with high rise manifold and a street avenger carb. The car has a 4.11 posi track and the trany shift well. The body is in fair condition and the rust is minimal for a 28 year old car. The bad news is the car needs new front break lines as it was bone dry due to a bad leak on the front driver side. The rear is fine due to the split master cylinder. The after market oil pressure gauge seams to be off as it has no oil pressure at idea in drive but reads 22 psi in when out of gear. The car has electric choke I don’t think it’s hooked up Wright and ideals at 1900 in neutral then drops to 6-9 when in gear. The car is very mild and the cam is not that extreme. I am sending the car up to a shop in on Thursday to have it checked out and tuned up. Like I said I am new and any advice or ideas are welcome thanks for your help and time.

Welcome to the forum, I have a 79 also, points to look close on the car for rust are rear frame rails trunk pan and floor pans and also the body mounts on the bottom of the fire wall. The 10 bolt rear if yours still has it is actually a fairly stout piece, trans was a th350 good trans(assuming its an auto). The oil pressure you are discribing scares me a bit I wouldnt be running it untill I put another guage on it. Other than that they are a nice car most parts are available and fairly cheap for them the value is going up on them (will most likely shoot up when the high school kids of 1979 reach their 50s and have money to relive their childhood lol)

Lol yeah I guess waiting is a good thing. It does have the 10 bolt and the pans are pretty good a little cancer on the lower part of the passenger door. The car is being towed to a shop on Tuesday I was scared too. As the rpm goes up so does the oil pressure but at idea it is nearly 0 but at 1200 its back up to 20 psi strange? It is the auto and seams to be smooth and other than some carb issues it seams to be running good no leaks other than the breaks.

Thanks. I will try to get some up in the morning. Its noting nice believe me it needs a lot of work before its in any kind of show or go condition but it isn’t a bad car for the price and it was well under my budget so it gave me a little extra to make her Wright.

Cool you'll have some extra cash to play with and can come home to a finished car.

I had a 79' Z28 when I was in college in 79' . I went on to buy an 84 t-top Camaro. But to this day, the 79' was my favorite. Stock 350 and was a smooth character[8D]. Unfortunately, I let my first wife (lol) keep it when we divorced in the early 80's. White w/blue trim & baby blue interior. And now? I'm reliving my actual high school days and buying a 69'. They were only 3-7yr old cars that everyone drove when I was in high school during 72'-76'. Camaros, Chevelles, GTOs, Mustangs....you name it. Those weren't just cool cars, it's just that they were THE cars that were available to us for a decent price.
