Default need tranny help!

Hello my fellow Chevy owners! I recently purchased an 87 Monte Carlo SS and the original owner replaced the stock 305 Engine with a 350 out of a 79 Camaro. However, he did not replace the transmission, i have been reading that the 5.7 350 runs with a 700r4 transmission, i have done some research and found some but before i purchase i want to make sure this is the tranny i need. So i figured i would ask the maro experts on here.

thanks for your help!

It all depends on how you be using your car. The over drive on the 700 is nice for fuel economy on the highway, If you are making a drag car I would go with a th350 or th400.

yeah, im kinda at a cross roads on what i wanna do because right now im just gonna keep the 350 in there, the previous owner rebuilt it so im gonna pull it out and check everything over and dress it up for now while i get the paint done. However, i wanna make the motor into a 383 stroker next winter and rebuild the whole thing. would a 700 be ok standing up to the much HP and torque of a 383?

A lot of 700r4's have been built to handle a 383 on the street, but if you're planning much strip time there are very few running them at the drags.

If I had to guess, the trans in your Monte is a 200-4R. Those can handle some serious punishment. Its the same tranny that came behind the 3.8 in the GN.

$1300 for his stage II tranny. It can't handle huge amounts of power but its no slouch.

As nomad said, your car did come with a 200-4R, which is close to the same physical dimensions as a TH350. The 700R4 is longer, and the crossmember mounting point is in a different spot than yours. You don't "chop up" the trans, you get the driveshaft shortened and modify your crossmember.

The 700r4 requires a little work to swap in, but the 200R overdrive is pretty much a bolt in. I'm probably going with the 700r4 in my OT project, just because it's a little beefier, and more plentiful than the 200R. Plus I like the lower 1st gear for a harder launch.

i didnt mean literally chop it up lol. So i found a site i am satisfied with and this is my next and last question, they have trannies from 82-93 Jimmy blazers to 83-93 camaros to 89-92 Astro Vans, so does it really matter which one i get? are they all gonna fit the same? and will trannies from suvs trucks or vans put more torque down than a tranny out of a car
