Hey Guys! I have been following this forum for a while as a avid camaro fan. I will be purchasing a 77 camaro that is in good shape all around except the 305 motor but intend to build 350 for it.

Being in California I want to make sure the camaro has it's correct smog parts before I purchase it. The current owner doesn't really know what it has though it had passed smog a year ago with a little extra cash.

What do I need to look for besides the smog pump to ensure I do not add more cost to my rebuild and I would be able to get it to pass smog? I will get the chance to look at the complete car in three weeks as I have only seen pictures of it.

 

I can't tell you what was factory smog equip. for Ca. in 1977, but you should check with the state to find out. Also, check to see if you can legally swap a 350 into it, and still be legal too!

 

Do they check the block casting numbers in Californi when they do a smog test?
If not, with the 350 set up looking like the 305, they wouldn't know what the hell it is.
If you had to, you could get creative with some JB Weld and carve your own casting #s.

 

Here in Oregon they used to check engine ID numbers. My old '71 had to go through DEQ until it was 25 yrs. old, and it always gave them fits, as they couldn't find a listing for a 427 engine for 1971 Camaro. They usually ended up running it through on 1969 specs, as that was the only 427 Camaro they had in their data.

 

No they don't run block casting numbers. As long as it came with a V8 it doesn't matter the size.

 

Besides a smog pump what else is typically on there?

 

Thought I would post a picture so hopefully it works. Will be paying $1000 for it. This vehicle was used for the filming of Friday Night Lights. The Crager rims are actually from Fast and the Furiuos. The floor pans, interior and new windows were done by Universal Studios so the car is in good shape.

 

With a smog pump, comes the lines to the exhaust manfolds, the charcoal canister that has return lines to the air pump and gas tank. Should also have a correct airfilter can for heat riser from exhaust manifold. Maybe more, but I can't recall for sure.

 

I have had two 1977 Camaros, both with 305 2barrel carbs, and neither had smog pumps or any sign of ever having smog pumps. Both were in stock form and tired condition.

 

That's interesting! I know the camaro was purchased in Florida in 77. The car has been registered in California so we will see what it has next weekend.
