I forget if the ITM shifters have this, but I know Hursts do. There is a spot in the middle of the shifter, looking up from the bottom. You can stick a 1/4" drill bit in there to set the shifter in perfect neutral, then adjust the rods. ITM shifters just wear out though and that may be the problem. I had on that would hang up on the 2-3 shift every time. I finally bought a Hurst Competition Plus and still have it 12 yrs later.
Find out what tranny you have and then describe how your having trouble. It may just be adjustment or rod bushings. What you have said is pretty vague.

It does sound like an alignment issue. If everything in the shifter isn't lined up in the neutral position properly you can't get the shifter lever to move into the reverse gate.
Here are instructions I copied from the Hurst instructions. These may help.
If the stick CANNOT be moved freely between 1-2 to 3-4 or
reverse path, one or more of the rod button adjustments must be
corrected. Move stick forward to 3rd, then back to 4th, then into
neutral. Insert neutral alignment rod. If rod CANNOT be inserted
freely, the 3-4 rod button is incorrectly adjusted. Similar testing of
1-2 shift will prove alignment of 1-2 rod adjustment.
To check reverse rod button adjustment, place stick at neutral.
Disconnect reverse rod adjusting button from reverse lever.
Grasp rod and push all the way toward front of car. Adjust rod
button for easy slip-in fit in bushing. Re-assemble and fasten with
spring clip.

Readjustment almost always fixes the issue, if all the rods and bushings are good. I usually pull the rods off all three arms, then use the lineup pin and then install each rod, adjusting them to fit as I go. If there's any question how they go back, be sure to take a picture before you remove them, but I doubt you'll need one.
