what is it and what is it for? cannot find any info on it in my haynes manual.

That's a vacuum reservoir for your interior heater controls, and cruise control.

tore out the cruise control but i need heat, which vacuum port should i use to hook this up too, carb? T from the rear of the intake?

Either the rear of the intake manifold, or the large port at the base of the carb, which is also manifold vacuum.
