Default my new 79 396

So a great deal fell into my lap. I am the proud new owner of a 79 camaro berlineta with a worked 396. I will be taking possesion in a couple of hours and will start my research immediatly. My question is where do I look for casting numbers to determine the type of heads and block and tranny that are on the car. The gentlemam that I am buying the car from has been deployed to the persian gulf and just wants the car gone. I have no way to contact him to find out the specifics about the drivetrain. His roommate claimed that the car ran low 12's. How can I find out what i bought for $500. Thanks in advance.

Man, you stole that car. The engine alone is worth at least that.
And yes to the heads, but doesn't the 396 have any?
Here's some decoding help: http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-ca...oding-help.asp
