Hey there I have an 81 camaro with a 350 (edelbrock rpm performer intake and cam, 650 cfm carb, long tube headers, just got rebuilt and tranny is T350 with b&m shift kit) and i cant seem to spin my tires of the line or even get a decent launch, it seems every car beats me off the line... i think it may be my stock 2.73 ring gears or my carb needs tuning and this is why i came here cause i thought you guys could help me

o and Im replacing my ring gears soon and i need advice on what too get i was think 3.73s but I dont know how stressed my engine would be on the highway...keep in mind i have a 3 speed auto with a final ratio of 1.00

any help is much appreciated

 

it is most likely the gears... 2.73 is pretty "low" for a car. my car has 3.42's and it doesn't even roast them very good from a 5mph rolling start, but of course if i pop the clutch or turn it roasts them... so i would definitely would say that it would be the gears. have you got it dyno'd?

 

no i havent got it dyno'd I dont plan on it why?

 

yeah, I had a 76 type lt with 2.73's and it would barely "bark" doing a neutral drop. 3.73's would make a big difference.

 

'Er,that would be "high" not low but yeah 2.73's are not exactly drag gears lol.

Bigger numbers = lower gears,less top seep and more power off the line.
3.73's are still quite streetable,might be a little low if you spend a lot of time on the superslab.
Not near as bad as 4.10's though and a lot of guys run them on the street.
A buddy of mine used to run 4.88's on the street in a '67 SS427 Chevelle.
That car was mean off the line lol,12 bolt posi and ladder bars,built 427/4 speed.

 

Because you may be in for a bit of a suprise.

 

Mine had that same problem but my torque converter was bad and i changed my gears to 4:10s in my 81 camaro with a 3 speed. And ill be honest my max speed in the car is still 157 on gps.befor the tree crushed mine. but mine is a 383 stroker.

 

MAN! 157 with 4.10's, I dont see how it got to that with out blowing. With 4.11's my old monza with a built 327 would sound like it was going to blow at about 85.

 

How tall were your tires and what was your redline?

When I got my 74 someone was in the process of taking it and turning it into a circle track racer. It had a 2.56 pegleg gearing in the *** but it was great on the freeway. I've moved to posi 3.42's along with a 2300 stall and I've definantly seen an improvement with my launches but at the cost of my highway driving. Where I used to do 80 at 2400 rpm's I now have to get around 3500 rpm for the same speed. I'm moving to a six speed to take advantage of two overdrives with the last one being a .5 gearing and then dropping either a Ford 3.89 or a 4.11 in there. In sixth gear I would still be running a final drive of 1.94 with the 3.89's.

If you do a lot of highway driving you'll notice it. I'll tell you that right now. It's up to you if you want to sacrifice it.

 

my motor redline is at 8200 it has a 2500 stall and it is a build 383 stroker full roller. it hit 157 on gps. in a 3 speed i didnt bealieve it either and that was untill it hit redline. the car it self was quick as hell. i dont really kno wat all is exactly done to the tranny but i kno it is not stock at all... cus in 1st gear i can do 62 2nd gear i can hit 104 and redline in 3rd is 157. max speed. my tire size is 255/60/15
