location of engine code?

RE: location of engine code?
even though I could be wrong the only known engine code would be the engine block number thats located just behind the drivers side cylinders. These would be the "odd" numbered cylinders. With that number you should be able to find out anything about that particular motor.

thanks for your help. i know how to read the codes off the block but i don't have the original motor, i was wandering how to find out what motor was in the car originally by looking on the vin plates or protect o plate.

RE: location of engine code?
There are at least 30 different engine blocks installed in cars from 65 to 69 - The block casting number is found behind the left side cylinder head - This number is embossed during the casting phase – In addition to this casting number there is a casting date code which is alphanumeric sequence.
First digit is A ~ L for the month - Second digit is Day - Third digit is Year.
I believe your casting number could be 3914678
In addition to this casting / date code there is an engine code (stamped number) that is very easy to locate. It is located in front of the right side cylinder bank and is stamped into the block after machining operation. All blocks have a special grain which was machined into the surface of the block deck. The grain pattern is straight lines, very fine lines, kind of like grind marks. If the machine marks you identify are circular, then the deck has been machined and is not original – Be careful of the stamped number – could have been changed.
I believe your stamped number will have the letters MS or MU in the code.

Pick up a copy of " Chevrolet By The Numbers" by Alan L. Colvin and turn to page 37. This book may help you figure it out. Looks like, starting in 1968, part of the VIN # was stamped into the block after machining. If your lucky yours may have been one of these. According to this book, Corvettes started in Jan. of 1960 and in 1962 the 327/300 HP and 409's were the first ones to be stamped.
Good Luck!
