I found it right under the front passanger seat area and I also went and got it emissions tested but no luck they said i should look into getting a new cat on it, is that a simple thing to do or is it a complicated conversion?

 

where do you live? everywhere ive ever been or heard of doesnt care about the emissions on anything older than 96, it just has to be there but it doesnt have to work. shoot there barely was emissions in 77.

 

I live in fort collins colorado and according to them I miss the quilifacation by 1 year so if it was a 76 I wouldnt need to get it tested.

 

Well that sucks. So they give your car a sniffer/dyno test, or is the emissions inspection a visual one?

 

Um not sure the whole process took around 30-40 min and they said they had to make sure everything was installed and they said they did and idle speed test, that is all pretty much gibberish to me.

 

A lot of states go back to post 1975 for emissions testing, and it will be both visual for components, and a sniffer. Oregon does all cars from 1975 forward.
The cat change is simple if it's a bolt in, and a bit more if it's a weld in. Any muffler shop can give you an estimate free. Check around and don't take the first estimate.

 

What I'm probably going to do is have my friend install it (he is a mechanic) any suggestions on what cat will get me a passing score? If i can find out what my emissions levels were I'll post hem later, but is there any cat that will for sure get me passed?

You don't necessarily have a choice of various cats. You need to install one rated for your type engine. They do make universals, but they're still rated for the engine, so a V8 cat is different than a 4 cyl. cat.
Determine what you have and take a look at what places like Summit, Jegs, and local parts stores have. Then have your buddy weld or bolt it in.
