Last week I bought a 70 Camaro and somebody has removed the trim tag/cowl tag. I know it was a original V8 car with a 4 spd trans and has a 10 bolt rear end. I was trying to figure out is the package of the car originally was since I don't have a trim tag to decode. Is this impossible to do without the tag? Thanks, Josh

 

My guess is someone else's car now has the options your car had.
Without the trim tag, or build sheet, there's no way to know or prove all the options your car should/did have. Some things can be obvious, such as a factory hole in the tunnel for the 4 speed. You can "suspect" it came with some options, but without proof it means nothing to anybody but you.

 

Thats a sweet looking project you have there Josh, unfortunatly Camaro69 is right about the tag. But if you plan on keeping it dont worry about the tag, i would love to have an early 2nd gen. Welcome aboard, where you located?

Thanks for the info guys. I am located in Cleveland, GA. I found this thing on craigslist last week for a $1000. I had to pick it up for that price. I just wish they wouldn't have removed the cowl tag so I would of known if it was a Z28 or SS car. But some good news is I just bought a small block 350 and 400 motor this morning. So I will be using the two to make a 383 stroker for the camaro.

Why not make a 377? Better motor IMHO.

 

Well without the trim tag you cant know for sure. But if it was a Z28 it would have a GM12 bolt rear end, a larger front anti-roll bar, and other suspension upgrades you can read about this on nastyz28.com. But I think you got a great deal, now you can make it anything you want and by the way welcome to the forums.

 

I thought about it but some 400's have problems running hot and wearing lobes on the cam.

 

They make 383 cranks to fit 350's now so you don't have to use the 400 crank and it's less work to.

 

Great buy at that price, regardless. You did very well indeed! I'd talk with your local machine shop or engine builder before persuing building anything by using the two engines. I think you'll save money reselling the 400 and build a 383 using just the 350 and a crank kit.
